Utah Firefighters Honored at National Ceremony


The 28th Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will honor one Utah firefighter who died in the line of duty in 2008. He will be among the 98 men and 5 women from 36 states remembered at the official national service held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg. One Utah firefighter and eighteen firefighters from other states who died in previous years will also be honored.

Chief Michael Penovich, age 38, of the Saratoga Springs Fire Department drowned after a motor vehicle accident while returning from a fire department meeting on July 5, 2007.

Chief Pilot Calvin Wahlstrom, age 61, of Neptune Aviation Services, Inc. died in an air tanker crash shortly after take-off from Nevada to the Burnside Fire in California on September 1, 2008.
