High West Distillery and Saloon, Utah’s first distillery since 1870, is thrilled to release a barrel-aged Manhattan called “The 36th Vote” to honor Utah’s deciding vote to end to Prohibition in 1933. High West will debut the “The 36th Vote” at precisely 5:32 PM at its Annual Repeal Day Celebration and first year anniversary on Sunday, December 5 from 4:30 – 9:30 p.m.

“What’s fascinating to me is that the Utah delegation wanted to be known as the 36th and final vote,” said David Perkins, Proprietor of High West Distillery. In fact, the leader of the state delegation and president of the Utah League for Prohibition Repeal is quoted as proclaiming “No other state shall take away this glory from Utah.” On December 5th 1933 at 5:32 PM EST, Utah delegate S.R. Thurman, satisfied that the thirty-fifth state (Pennsylvania) had ratified, cast the last ballot for Utah and the 18th amendment’s fate was sealed. High West will debut “The 36th Vote”.

“We think ‘The 36th Vote Barrel Aged Manhattan’ is the world’s first barrel aged cocktail to be bottled. The mixture is two parts of High West’s award-winning Rendezvous Rye Whiskey, one part of premium sweet vermouth, and a “dash” of bitters. It was aged in an American white oak barrel for 4 months, resulting in a well-balanced marriage of the rye’s spiciness, the vermouth’s herbs, and the bitters’ complexity,” said Perkins.

Tickets to High West’s Repeal Day Celebration are available for $75 per person and include a full dinner buffet, two drink tickets, a taste of The 36th Vote and live music from Nashville stars Josh Kelley, Monty Powell and Anna Wilson. Executive Chef James Dumas will also unveil High West’s new winter menu featuring contemporary western victuals. 1930s-era costumes are encouraged. The 36th Vote will be bottled and available for purchase on December 6, 2010 at the High West General Store in Park City.
