Grill on the Hill BBQ Championship

Utah's contribution to world cuisine may be green jello and funeral potatoes, but with our great outdoor environment, some championship barbequers have surely come out of the state as well.

Think you're one of them? Enter yourself in this new event up at Snowbird.

Snowbird, Utah – The spotlight will be on America’s favorite pastime at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort this summer during the inaugural Grill on the Hill BBQ Championship June 20-21, 2008. The newest addition to Snowbird’s summer event lineup will pit the best barbeque chefs in the country against one another and provide plenty of good food, children’s activities, live music and entertainment for spectators along the way.

“By combining three of the season’s most enjoyable traditions – barbeque, outdoor activities and free live music – Grill on the Hill is the perfect way to kick off Snowbird’s event-filled summer,” said Teri Mumm, general manager of the Snowbird Renaissance Center, the non-profit organization responsible for Snowbird cultural activities.

The Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned competition features the best pit cooks from across the nation vying for their share of $10,000 in cash and prizes. Competition categories include pork ribs, pork shoulder, beef brisket and chicken.

The festivities begin Friday, June 20, at 3 p.m. when the food vendors, beer garden and marketplace open. Live music begins at 4 p.m. and the barbeque competition kicks off at 5 p.m. The live music lineup Friday includes Lionfish, Blues on First, Marv Hamilton Band, Zion Tribe and is headlined by the Clumsy Lovers.

The grilling continues beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 21, and the awards presentation will take place at 4:30 p.m. All other activities including children’s games, live music and food vendors run from noon-8 p.m. Saturday. Fat Paw, ATF, Harry Lee and Abraxas, a Santana tribute band, will provide live music throughout the day Saturday.

The Grill on the Hill BBQ Championship and festivities take place at Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, located 25 miles from downtown Salt Lake City in scenic Little Cottonwood Canyon. Take Little Cottonwood Canyon Road to Snowbird Entry 2. Lodging packages are available at www.snowbird.com.
