Park City, UT (September 12, 2007) – The 2nd annual Fall Family Fest will take place on Saturday, October 6th to benefit the “Get to Know the Snow & Ice” Scholarship Fund founded by Anne Fortney and Joel Fine. The event will be held at the Park City Ice Arena & Sports Complex from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by Grand Summit Mortgage and Windermere Real Estate; with supporting sponsors including IHC, Washington Mutual, Nicholas & Company, Coca Cola and the Wasatch Brew Pub.
The Fund began after Fortney realized there was a need in the community to assist local elementary school children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in winter sports activities. The Fund, which provides financial support as well as the use of proper clothing and equipment, is administered by the Youth WinterSports Alliance. The Park City Municipal Corporation and the Underdog Foundation have both partnered with the Youth WinterSports Alliance to host the upcoming Festival in hopes of expanding the Fund to reach an even greater number of children in 2008. In addition, several local Park City businesses have also stepped up and are getting involved.
The success of the first year of the “Get to Know the Snow & Ice” Scholarship Fund has made us realize the need for these types of scholarships within the community,” states Shelley Gillwald, executive director of the Youth WinterSports Alliance. “Funding from grants and events like this provide an avenue for children whom might not otherwise have the opportunity to learn a winter sport after school. The Fall Family Fest will help to raise funds for these scholarships.”
Featured activities for the Fall Family Fest include a Chili and BBQ cook-off; both amateur and professional chefs are invited to participate. The BBQ cook-off will be judged by the Kansas City BBQ Association and winners will qualify for future national BBQ events while the Chili Cook Off will be judged by popular vote. In addition, there will be free public skating, sports demonstrations, games and activities for kids, including an appearance by the Utah Grizzlies and Grizzbee along with live music from local artists. To ensure Mother Nature doesn’t spoil our fun, all activities will be hosted under tents.
“There aren’t many family events in the fall and we felt this would be a great opportunity to demonstrate winter sports at the ice arena in Park City,” said Joel Fine, Co-Chair for the event. “Guests will not only be able to watch demonstrations, but actually participate in the sports”.
“This event is a wonderful opportunity for the community to experience and explore the Park City Ice Arena and sports fields,” said Co-Chair Stacey Noonan. “This facility was built to benefit the community and we are excited to show it off on October 6th. Guests will also have the opportunity to get a guided behind the scenes tour of the arena.”
All members of the community are encouraged to attend. Guests of the Fall Family Fest will be charged a nominal fee of $10 per car, $5 per person or $2 per bike and once inside will have the opportunity to enjoy Chili, BBQ, beer, wine and other beverages. Parents will also have the opportunity to sign their children up for winter activities through each of the thirteen Youth WinterSports Alliance programs, including skelton, ski jumping, alpine racing, hockey, speed skating, figure skating, luge, freestyle skiing, aerials, snowboarding, Nordic skiing and sled hockey. In addition, guests will have the opportunity to learn more about local athletic activities for kids. Each will showcase an education, art, advocacy or athletic program that impacts the children of Park City and Summit County.
