Destination #2

12:00 pm – Julie Nester Gallery

Address: 1280 Iron Horse Drive, Park City
Phone: 435.649.7855

The entrance is on Bonanza, but the address is 1280 Iron Horse. Parking is available on the premises.

About: Julie and Doug Nester have arranged for the Young Benefactors to meet visiting artist Donna Mintz, whose exhibit, Lighting the Sun, is currently on view at the gallery.Lighting the Sun features paintings and mixed media by Mintz. Mintz is a painter from Atlanta, Georgia. In this exhibit she presents a grouping of paintings and a large installation made of nearly 5,000 shards of glass. The impetus for the work comes from a man-made lake outside of Atlanta that has recently receded due to a prolonged drought. Lake Lanier was formed in the 1950s when local authorities dammed two rivers. The land that the lake occupied was previously home to the Cherokee and Mississippian Indians and the settlers that followed them. Traces of these previous inhabitants were covered up when the lake was formed. Due to the drought, these traces are now being re-exposed. The artist has spent hours in the dry lakebed gathering artifacts and evidence of their existence.

The almost 5,000 glass shards that make up the center installation were gathered where they were discarded 60 to 100 or more years ago. The glass shards are strung on mono filament and are suspended from the ceiling. These floating bits of color and shape create a festive monument to reclamation and transformation. The collaged paintings in the exhibit contain as many as 20 layers of paint and refer to the archaeological process by which the artist found the artifacts – the alternate covering and uncovering in order to find what was beneath.

Sushi rolls and beverages will be served.
