This Holiday Season, Local First Utah Encourages You to Commit 10% of your Holiday Shopping Dollars to Local Businesses and See the Impact Your Wallet Can Have
SALT LAKE CITY – NOVEMBER 19, 2008 – In the midst of this struggling economy, the upcoming holiday season promises to be a challenging one for both consumers and businesses. What can you do to help, AND get the most for your money? “Make the “10% Shopping Shift!” This holiday season, Local First Utah encourages you to shift 10% of your dollars to local independent businesses, and our partner businesses will thank you with a 10% discount! By shifting just 10% of your holiday spending, you’ll help keep millions of dollars in the local ecomony, and we’ll all benefit from the stabilizing and strengthening “multiplier effect” it has on our economy.
Shopping at local independent retailers has taken on even more economic importance than ever before. Research shows that the local, independent businesses and banks of “Main Street” are the economic drivers that have supported and sustained our communities; they create the real wealth that sustains the places we call home. For example, the San Francisco Retail Diversity Study found that a slight shift in consumer purchasing behavior – diverting just 10% of purchases from national chain stores to locally owned businesses – would, each year, create 1,300 new jobs and yield nearly $200 million in incremental economic activity. Study after study finds similar results, in a wide array of towns, cities, and states. The evidence is clear: supporting local businesses is key to pumping up local income, wealth, jobs, and taxes, and the more residents, businesses, and city officials that support locally owned businesses, the greater the economic rewards. You can be responsible for injecting millions into your local economy, simply by shopping and dining only locally-owned during Buy Local First Week from November 29th through December 6th.
